Last week, Public Policy Polling had TX Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst on the cusp of winning outright the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate. In Texas, any candidate winning more than 50% of the primary vote wins the nomination. Less than 50% pushes the race to a run-off between the top two voter getters. Despite all of his institutional and fund raising advantages, it looks like Dewhurst will now be forced into a run-off with conservative Tea Party-backed candidate Ted Cruz.
The multi-candidate field will now be pared to a two-man race — the establishment candidate Dewhurst against the grass-roots candidate Cruz. The run-off election will be held at the end of July.
Dewhurst had dominated fund raising during the primary campaign. With the refocusing on the campaign on a two-person race. and with the tea party on the cusp of another upset victory, it is questionable whether Dewhurst’s cash advantage will be sustained.
