President Obama has decided to interfere in states’ issues once again by stating that he opposes the Minnesota constitutional amendment that would define marriage as the union of a man and a woman.
The White House news release states:
… while the President does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the record is clear that the President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same-sex couples. That’s what the Minnesota ballot initiative would do — it would single out and discriminate against committed gay and lesbian couples.
The news release is correct: Obama doesn’t interfere in every state issue. He only interferes in the ones that appeal to his constituencies. Gay support for Obama in 2008 was very strong; he reputedly got 70% of the gay vote.
It’s an election year, so Obama can’t come out of the closet as to what he truly believes. He has said since the time he was a candidate for the presidency that his views on gay marriage were “evolving,” that the beliefs he had held before from his “religious upbringing” might change. But that was hogwash and a smokescreen; he has always believed in gay marriage. In 1996, as a state Senate candidate in Illinois, he wrote, “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages.”
Obama certified the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” the policy preventing gays from openly serving in the military. He called the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. Is it any wonder he’s interfering with states again with regard to vital elements of the leftist agenda on gay issues?
