Dem Congresswoman: Trayvon Case a 'Hate Crime'

Appearing on Soledad O’Brien’s CNN show this morning, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) stated:

I think his mother described it perfectly. It’s a character assassination. We’re seeing a lot of facts unveiled each day …. There are too many unanswered questions.

And I really, personally believe, this is a hate crime.

An interviewer asked whether “we’ve been willing to jump to conclusions this might be a hate crime … at the expense of the facts in this case.” Waters, who only moments before, said there were unanswered questions, responded:

Listen, a 17-year-old young man is dead. He was killed after it has been revealed that he was being followed. He was not committing a crime, he was not armed, and so as we listen to the 911 calls and we hear about conversations that Trayvon was having with his girlfriend … Let me just say this, the evidence really points to a fact that you had a gung-ho so-called neighborhood watchman who wanted to be a cop basically, who was following a young black man who was unarmed and had committed no crime. That’s pretty stiff evidence that this is possibly a hate crime. In addition to that, there are those who have listened to some of these tapes and they hear some words … they appear to be words that would certainly lead you to believe that this was a hate crime.

Waters is obviously jumping to conclusions without knowing the facts – but never let the complete facts get in the way of a good story.
