According to a new book, The Real Romney, “one close aide privately called Romney’s Dukakis II,” comparing it to then-Governor Michael S. Dukakis’s plan to phase in near-universal coverage in Massachusetts.
To help pass RomneyCare, Romney brought in Jonathan Gruber, an economics professor at MIT and adviser to Democrats on health care. John Sasso, the longtime Dukakis, Ted Kennedy, and John Kerry political strategist, was representing the health care industry in Massachusetts. It was Sasso who helped Romney get the Massachusetts legislature onboard.
