WATERVILLE, Maine, Sept. 10 (UPI) —
A fifth grade class in Maine is "very sad" a thief stole their onions.
The Albert S. Hall School students planted 100 yellow onions for a school project in June, and planned to harvest the crop this week. All of the onions were missing when the class visited the garden Tuesday.
"They were all gone — the whole bed," teacher Mary Dunn told the Morning Sentinel.
The fifth graders intended to give half of the onions to the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter, and half to the school kitchen for cafeteria meals. Dunn launched the gardening program in 2009, and the project was designed to teach students the benefits of gardening and healthy eating.
"I hope that the person that did it actually tells us because if they just came and told us, then they wouldn’t be in trouble," student Hannah Hall said.
Albert S. Hall School has received over $4,000 in grants to implement projects that promote farming and healthy living. The fifth grade class is currently learning how to pickle cucumbers.
