ALBUQUERQUE, May 20 (UPI) —
Jeremy Martin, 24, is claiming that an encounter with the Albuquerque police during a traffic stop caused him to lose a testicle.
The University of New Mexico law student was stopped by police after he failed to stop at a stop sign. Police claim that he was driving while under the influence. Officers said they threw Martin to the ground after he resisted arrest and claim they only fought him to protect themselves.
Martin’s injuries were documented by an officer at the hospital. They include scrapes to the face, wrists and one knee. According to the police report, it was also noted he had "a dressing over his genitals for an injury that required removal of one testicle."
This is not the first time the Albuquerque Police Department has been accused of using excessive force. The Justice Department concluded in an investigation that the department used excessive lethal and nonlethal force after the shooting of a homeless man.
Martin has been charged with an aggravated DWI and resisting arrest. He has pled not guilty.
