WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 (UPI) —
The deadly shooting spree at the Washington Navy Yard Monday prompted the White House to cancel an evening celebration of Latino music.
"In light of today’s tragic events at the Washington Navy Yard and out of respect for the victims and their families, Musica Latina will be postponed to a new date," the White House press secretary’s office said in a statement.
President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama were to have welcomed various Latino musicians to the White House’s East Room as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.
At least 13 people, including a gunman, died in the morning rampage.
