LAS VEGAS, Jan. 12 (UPI) — R&B singer The Weeknd was arrested Saturday in Las Vegas for allegedly punching a police officer at a hotel.
The singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, was allegedly involved in an altercation around 4:20 a.m. local time at the Cromwell Hotel, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department public information officer Laura Meltzer told Billboard.
It’s unclear if that altercation was physical in nature, but when a police officer showed up and attempted to separate the involved parties, Tesfaye allegedly struck the officer in the side of the head with a closed fist.
Tesfaye was arrested and charged with one count of misdemeanor battery of a protected person. By Saturday night he had posted bail. The singer posted a photo of himself walking to a private jet with the caption, “Escaped from Las Vegas” on Instagram.
