MOUNT DESERT, Maine (AP) — David Rockefeller has made a rare public appearance ahead of his 100th birthday.

The retired CEO of Chase Manhattan Bank on Friday formally announced the donation of 1,000 acres bordering Acadia National Park in Maine.

He told an assembly that he’s been visiting Seal Harbor since he was a youngster. He says he’s happy to see the land preserved for future generations through the transfer to the Mount Desert Island & Garden Preserve.

The oldest member of the Rockefeller family stood and moved with the assistance of a walker.

He was joined by his daughter Neva Rockefeller Goodwin and son David Rockefeller Jr.

His daughter said 1,000 acres amounts to 10 acres for each year of his life.

His birthday is June 12.
