Los Angeles (AFP) – Oakland Raiders receiver Amari Cooper is to join the Dallas Cowboys in a trade deal which will see the struggling California franchise receive a 2019 first-round draft pick in return, reports said Monday.
Cooper, the fourth overall pick in the 2015 draft, joins a Dallas offense which has looked light on receiving options this season following the release of Dez Bryant and retirement of tight end Jason Witten.
The Raiders have just one win from six games this year under new coach Jon Gruden, who also traded away defensive star Khalil Mack to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a draft pick last month.
The Raiders will now have three first-round draft selections in 2019, giving Gruden the opportunity to rebuild the roster to his liking.
Cooper, 24, made a successful start to his NFL career, earning Pro Bowl selections in 2015 and 2016 while racking up more than 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first two seasons.
Cooper failed to replicate those numbers in 2017 however where he finished with 48 receptions for 680 yards from 14 games.
This year Cooper has also struggled to put up big numbers, with 22 catches for 280 yards and a touchdown from six games.
The Cowboys meanwhile have made a sputtering start to the 2018 campaign, stumbling to a 20-17 defeat by the Washington Redskins on Sunday that leaves them at 3-4 for the season in the NFC East.
