June 13 (UPI) — The Miami Dolphins reached an agreement with linebacker Jerome Baker on a three-year contract extension, the team announced Sunday.

League sources told ESPN and NFL Media that Baker’s three-year deal is worth $39 million, including $28.4 million guaranteed. The Dolphins later confirmed the extension, but the team didn’t disclose financial terms.

Baker has emerged as one of the Dolphins’ leaders on defense and helped the team’s defensive unit improve from the worst scoring defense (30.9 points per game) in 2019 to the fifth-ranked defense in points allowed (21.1) last season.

“I want to play here for the rest of my career. I love it here,” Baker told reporters Friday. “I love the fans, I love the organization, I love everybody here. Yeah, I definitely see myself playing here for a long time.”

The 24-year-old Baker was a third-round draft pick out of Ohio State in 2018. He recorded a career-best seven sacks and seven tackles for a loss last season.

Baker also notched 100-plus tackles for the second straight season and has yet to miss a game in his professional career.

In 48 career games, Baker has tallied 317 total tackles, 11.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, two interceptions and 10 passes defensed.
