Nov. 11 (UPI) — Mattel has apologized after inadvertently directing customers of its new line of Wicked dolls to a pornographic website, stating it is taking action to remove the misprinted toys’ packaging.
“We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this,” the toy company said in a statement to CNN.
Mattel has released the set of dolls ahead of the launch of the Wicked film, an adaptation of the popular Broadway musical.
However, a website printed on the box of the new toys, intended to direct customers to movie’s official landing page, instead directed them to a pornographic website that shares the same name as the forthcoming movie.
In its statement, Mattel said it was made aware of the issue on the weekend. It was unclear how many toys were affected by the misprint, but the company said they were primarily sold in the United States.
Those in possession of the misprinted packages are being advised by Mattel to discard them.
The film, starring Ariana Grand and Cynthia Erivo, is to hit U.S. theatres on Nov. 22.
