Japanese two-way star Shohei Ohtani crushed the first grand slam of his career as the Los Angeles Angels bagged their 20th win of the season with an 11-3 rout of the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.
Ohtani bludgeoned an 88.5 miles-per-hour cutter from Rays reliever Calvin Faucher 413 feet into left center field with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to complete the Angels scoring.
It was the 27-year-old American League MVP’s second home run of the night after he jumped on a similar pitch from Jalen Beeks in the sixth inning for a solo shot.
It was the second time this season Ohtani has hit multiple home runs in a single game, and the eighth time he has achieved the feat in the major leagues.
Ohtani’s offensive heroics were matched by Angels star Mike Trout, who lashed a two-run home run in the sixth inning, his record 161st homer at Angel Stadium.
The Angels improved to 20-11 and lead the AL West standings from the Houston Astros, who are second with an 18-11 record.
