July 11 (UPI) — Steve Whitmire, the voice behind lead Muppet Kermit the Frog, has been replaced after voicing the character for 27 years.
Muppets Studio’s has confirmed with ABC News that Matt Vogel is taking over voicing the iconic character from Whitmire starting with the newest edition “Muppets Thought of the Week,” a weekly web video that premieres across the Muppets’ social media channels.
A spokeswoman for the company declined to comment on the details surrounding Whitmire’s departure.
Whitmire first took on the role of Kermit starting in 1990 following the death of Muppets creator Jim Henson. Whitmire was hand-picked by Henson’s son to voice Kermit, Kill Screen noted.
Whitmire’s last notable work voicing Kermit was seen during ABC’s short-lived comedy series Muppets.
