June 8 (UPI) — HBO Max announced Tuesday that it has renewed Hacks for a second season. The first season finale will air Thursday.
Hacks stars Jean Smart as Las Vegas stand-up comedian Deborah Vance. Deborah hires fledgling TV writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) to write jokes to update her act.
“I told Hannah it’s ‘No more Miss Nice Guy,” Smart said in a statement. “From now on it’s Bette and Joan! And guess who’s BETTE??!!'”
Deborah is a tough boss, rejecting most of Ava’s submissions and sending Ava to run her errands. However, Ava is teaching Deborah about the modern social media culture.
HBO Max reports that Hacks has remained in its top 10 since it premiered May 13. The show also received raves from critics from The New Yorker, The Chicago Sun Times, The New York Times, Hollywood Reporter and more.
Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky created Hacks. Downs also plays a role as Deborah and Ava’s agent who paired them together and continues to field their frustrated phone calls.
