Feb. 8 (UPI) — Jake Gyllenhaal displays his singing skills in a preview video for his upcoming appearance in Broadway musical, Sunday in the Park With George.
The clip released on Facebook Tuesday, features the actor performing the play’s signature number “Finishing the Hat” as he makes his way onstage in the newly-renovated Hudson Theater.
The video was captured by True Detective Season 1 director and executive producer Cary Joji Fukunaga and features a full orchestra backing Gyllenhaal.
“This is what happens when Riva Marker (the [expletive] president of NineStories) and I invite Cary Joji Fukunaga to rehearsals for our new Broadway musical. Check out this video we made! #SundayintheParkWithGeorge,” Gyllenhaal captioned the Facebook post. NineStories is the star’s production company.
“I knew he could sing, definitely,” Fukunaga said of the footage while speaking with Billboard. “Jake and I are friends, and he just called me up last weekend to say, ‘Hey, I’m doing this.’ I’m in the last throes of writing a screenplay, but the idea of shooting in this cool old Broadway theater with Jake was too enticing to resist.”
Previews begin for Sunday in the Park with George starting Feb. 11 with opening night scheduled for Feb. 23.
Gyllenhaal, who is playing lead Georges Seurat, will be joined by Tony winners Annaleigh Ashford and Robert Sean Leonard.
