March 28 (UPI) — Authorities in Spain said they intercepted a shipment of bananas that included 57 fake fruits hiding packages of cocaine.
The Guardia Civil police said investigators working in tandem with the county’s Tax Authority examined the shipment that arrived in the Mediterranean port of Valencia from South America and discovered 57 of the bananas in the shipment were resin decoys concealing 15.4 pounds of cocaine.
The investigators found another 22 pounds of cocaine hidden inside the cardboard box flaps transporting the real bananas.
The discovery was made in November of last year, but police only recently revealed the details of the discovery and the arrests of two men, a Spanish citizen and an Italian citizen, in connection with the case. A third man, an Italian citizen, is under investigation in connection to the cocaine smuggling attempt.
