May 19 (UPI) — Demi Lovato has come out as non-binary and is changing their pronouns to they/them.
The 28-year-old singer and actor said in an Instagram post Wednesday that they identify as non-binary, or a person whose gender identity does not fit into the binary of male or female.
“I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward,” Lovato wrote. “This has come after a lot of healing and self-reflective work.”
“I’m still learning and coming into myself, and I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson,” they said. “Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me. I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones.”
Lovato elaborated in an accompanying video.
“I feel this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and am still discovering,” they said.

Lovato’s coming out follows their discussion about “fluidity” with attraction on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast in March. Lovato confirmed they identify as pansexual, or someone who is attracted to all genders.
“I also don’t know if I’m going to end up with a guy, so I can’t really see myself maybe getting pregnant,” they said. “I’m so fluid now — and a part of the reason why I am so fluid is because I was super closeted off.”
Lovato previously said on Radio Andy that they were still figuring out their sexuality but had told their parents in 2017 that they saw themselves “ending up possibly with a woman.”
Lovato released their seventh studio album, Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over, in April. The album explores Lovato’s 2018 overdose and struggles with addiction.
