‘Mank’ leads the way with 10 Oscar nods

'Borat,' 'Mank,' 'Minari, 'Judas' earn Oscar nods

March 15 (UPI) — With many cinemas closed this past year, films released via streaming services dominated the Oscar nominations list Monday morning.

The Netflix movie Mank led the field with 10 nods, including Best Picture.

Tied with six nominations apiece were The Father (Sony Pictures Classics,) Judas and the Black Messiah (Warner Bros.,) Minari (A24,) Nomadland (Searchlight,) Sound of Metal (Amazon) and The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Netflix.)

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Netflix) and Promising Young Woman (Focus Features) each earned five nominations, while News of the World (Universal) picked up four, One Night in Miami (Amazon) and Soul (Disney) scored three and Another Round (Samuel Goldwyn) and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (Amazon) were nominated for two.

Emerald Fennell who helmed Promising Young Woman and Chloe Zhao who directed Nomadland — made history by becoming the first female directors to be nominated in the same year in the Best Director category.

Minari star Steven Yeun is the first Asian American nominated for Best Actor.

Celebrity couple Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas read the names aloud from London in an online event.

The Oscars honor excellence in cinema. This year’s winners are to be announced on April 25 in a ceremony on ABC.
