John Bolton Appoints Dr. Charles Kupperman Deputy National Security Advisor

National Security Advisor John Bolton announced on Friday that he has appointed Dr. Charles Kupperman as his deputy.

“Charlie Kupperman has been an advisor to me for more than thirty years, including during my tenure as National Security Advisor to President Trump,” said Ambassador John Bolton. “Charlie’s extensive expertise in defense, arms control and aerospace will help further President Trump’s national security agenda.”

Kupperman and 44 other national security experts signed a letter in September 2017 urging President Donald Trump to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, according to a release posted by the Center for Security Policy.

He helped Bolton staff the National Security Council (NSC) when Bolton first took the position of national security advisor, Politico reported, citing NSC spokesman Robert Palladino. The outlet also cited an unnamed source saying Kupperman was more of a part of “listening sessions” than interviews.

The new deputy national security advisor will serve as assistant to the president as well. The White House pointed to Kupperman’s “four decades of national security policy and program experience” and time serving in President Ronald Reagan’s administration. He served in several departments under Reagan: the Executive Office of the President, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the President’s General Advisory Committee on Arms Control and Disarmament. Kupperman also served as foreign policy advisor to Regan’s presidential campaign.

Kupperman holds a Ph.D. in strategic studies, a master’s degree in international relations, and a bachelor’s degree in political science. He worked for Boeing as vice president for Product Development and Missile Defense Systems and for Lockheed Martin as vice president of Washington Space Operations.

Bolton has been traveling in the Middle East in the past week.
