Syria’s Permanent Representative to the U.N. Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari called the United States a “monster … who sponsored terrorism” throughout the Middle East during a session of the Security Council on the situation in Syria on Tuesday.
“The U.S. representative said that there is a single monster today which stands in the face of the whole world, and it is a monster which has armed and financed terrorists for more than seven years in Syria, and I say that this monster is the U.S., Britain, and France who sponsored terrorism in Syria and before it in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya,” al-Jaafari said, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday also claimed that the United States and Israel are “boosting the morale of terrorists” in Syria.
On Saturday, a deadly chemical weapons attack occurred in the last Syrian rebel-held town of Douma, leaving at least 60 people dead and injuring at least 1,000 more.
The Syrian regime has denied carrying out the chemical attack.
President Donald Trump has promised the United States will respond to the Syrian chemical attack with force, though the White House has not specified what course of action the commander-in-chief will choose.
In response to this, al-Jaafari reportedly added that threats from the United States to launch a missile attack will not dissuade Syria from preserving its sovereignty and territorial integrity and from confronting any aggression regardless of its source.
Al-Jaafari also claimed that “the reality [is] that the US, Britain, and France are the ones who caused the failure of what was called the Joint Investigative Mechanism due to their insistence on politicizing its work and exerting pressure on its leaders,” and that the United States used false and fabricated excuses about the use of chemical weapons in Khan Sheikhoun to attack al-Shairat Airbase last year.
Like Iran’s Foreign Minister Zarif, al-Jaafari reiterated that Syria strongly condemns any use of chemical weapons by anyone and under any circumstances.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has a very clear position regarding chemical weapons; we condemn their use by anyone, anywhere and against any country,” Zarif said on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Trump tweeted a warning to Russia, which has backed Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad writing, “Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and “smart!” You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!”
