In Ecuador, at least 500 people have died, and 2,500 remain injured from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Saturday.

Officials continue to rescue survivors trapped under buildings several days after the earthquake struck.

More than 200 people died in the Manabi Province, the hardest-hit part of Ecuador.

“It was something very ugly. We thought it was the end of the world,” a survivor told CNN. “It started hard, way too hard. We fell. We couldn’t get up. It was too strong. … If it had fallen the other way, we would have died.”

The Ecuadorian government has sent more than “10,000 soldiers and 4,600 police officers to the affected areas.” Medical officials propped up hospitals and shelters to tend to the wounded.

“The lack of water and communication remains a big problem,” said Ricardo Peñaherrera of the national emergency management office in Ecuador. “Many highways are in bad shape, especially in the mountainous area, because it has been raining recently due to (the) El Niño weather phenomenon.”
