San Diego Congressman Scott Peters is sticking to a position of “undecided” on the Iran deal despite growing Democratic Party opposition that includes influential Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY).
Breitbart News asked a representative for Peters if the Congressman had come to a decision on the Iran deal in light of Schumer’s statement late last week. Peters’ Press Secretary Michael Campbell replied on Monday that the Congressman’s position remains undecided. “He continues to evaluate the deal and gather information.”
Rep. Juan Vargas (D-CA), also of the San Diego delegation, not only came out strongly against the deal in late July, but also urged his fellow Representatives to join him.
“I intend to stand up and vote against this deal. This is not a partisan issue. This is an issue of our national security, and the security of our allies and I urge my colleagues to join me in opposing this deal,” Vargas wrote in an op-ed for the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Schumer offered a diplomatic alternative to the deal, rejecting the idea that the Iran deal was the only alternative to war.
“Better to keep U.S. sanctions in place, strengthen them, enforce secondary sanctions on other nations, and pursue the hard-trodden path of diplomacy once more, difficult as it may be.”
Schumer and Vargas both issued statements that referred to Iran’s support of terror groups; asserted Iran will not become more moderate just because of the deal; voiced concern over inspection delays; and noted that the deal does not ultimately block Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Marine Corps combat veteran Jacquie Atkinson, who is challenging Peters for his Congressional seat in the 2016 election, has come out publicly calling for Peters to oppose the Iran deal. “I call on Congressman Peters to show some integrity and backbone and vote against this deal,” she said in a public statement.
California Democrat Rep. Brad Sherman also came out in opposition to the Iran deal. Sherman told Breitbart News last week that the Iran deal means “terrorism with impunity.”
Peters remained “undecided” Monday despite these calls from area Democrats for him, and others, to oppose the deal.
