Rep. Scott Peters (D-CA) has a Republican challenger for 2016–and she is calling on him to oppose the Iran deal.
“I call on Congressman Peters to show some integrity and backbone and vote against this deal,” said Jacquie Atkinson in a public statement.
Atkinson is a Marine Corps combat veteran–and also an open lesbian.
She has been outspoken over the past several days about her opposition to the Iran deal, which was agreed last month by Iran and the P5+1 (U.S., United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Germany).
Rep. Peters remains undecided on his position, a spokesperson told Breitbart News on Tuesday.
In her statement, Atkinson said: “Mr. Peters, the time for partisan politics is done, the reality is this is a bad deal that needs to be stopped and I call on you to do the right thing and vote against this deal.”
Atkinson warned of the irreversible damage the deal would do by releasing Iran’s frozen assets and lifting European sanctions. “Sanctions relief should be gradual and ONLY after Iran shows they are compliant with all of its commitments, this deal does not do that,” she said.
Peters narrowly won re-election last year in the highly contested 52nd congressional district. He faced another gay Republican, Scott DeMaio, who is now active in statewide pension reform initiatives.
Last month, Peters’ fellow San Diego Democrat, Rep. Juan Vargas (D-CA), came out strongly against the deal in an op-ed for the San Diego Union-Tribune in which he wrote, “I intend to stand up and vote against this deal. This is not a partisan issue. This is an issue of our national security, and the security of our allies.”
