A German carnival that planned a Charlie Hebdo float in its parade has dropped the idea in light of the January 7 Paris terror attack on the satirical magazine’s headquarters.
The carnival’s Rose Monday parade is scheduled for February 2.
According to Reuters, “Jitters about public displays of words or images that might anger some Muslims have risen in Europe since Islamist gunman attacked a French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket in Paris on January 7-9, killing 17 people.”
In the first of the attacks–the one directed toward Charlie Hebdo—Breitbart News reported that three hooded men went into Charlie Hebdo headquarters and gunned down 12 people, wounded 10 others, and yelled “Allahu Akbar” during their retreat from the building.
Reuters says Carnival organizers are trying to avoid giving any offense at their event.
Organizers said: “We want all visitors, locals and participants in Monday’s carnival parade to freely experience a joyful carnival without any worries. We don’t want a satirical float, which weighs on the freedom and lighthearted mood of carnival.”
But organizers also said that if they had gone forward with float plans, “there would have been no shortage of people willing to accompany the float.”
In the past, the Rose Monday parade has been characterized by satirical floats “mocking politicians and global events.”
