Mohamed Badie, the Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, has been sentenced to life in prison, stemming from charges that he was responsible for countless murders and violent acts during riots in Cairo last year.
The trial was known as the Bahr al-Azam case, which surrounds an alleged incident where Badie and accomplices were convicted of murdering five and attempting to kill over one-hundred more.
In late April, Badie and 682 other Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood members were controversially sentenced to death. All of the death sentences have been subjected to the appeals process.
Badie has been a member of the Muslim Brotherhood for decades. He has in the past worked with Muslim Brotherhood founder Sayyed Qutb, who was known to be a closet admirer of Adolf Hitler.
Badie has often called for the genocidal destruction of the State of Israel. In 2012, when calling for the Jewish state’s destruction, he said that “jihad is obligatory” and that “the Zionists only understand force. “Israel has recently developed a de facto alliance with new Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi against the Muslim Brotherhood.
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was recently installed as Egypt’s president following the tumultuous reign of the Muslim Brotherhood under Mohamed Morsi.
Morsi is also on trial for a multitude of charges and could face a penalty as severe as a death sentence. Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood regime was also recently accused of giving away Egyptian military troop positions to the government of Qatar.
