Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) have come together to call upon the Muslim world, both Sunni and Shiite, to stop fighting each other and unite against the West, specifically the United States.
“We call upon [The Muslim community] to support our people in Iraq and Sham and support them with the valuable and priceless… and stand in their ranks against… America, the source of evil and symbol of corruption and injustice,” the statement read, which was posted Tuesday by an official Al Qaeda Twitter account.
The bulletin continued: “Stop the infighting between you and stand as one rank against America’s campaign and that of its satanic alliance that lies in wait for all of us, to break us stick by stick.”
AQAP and AQIM urged warring Islamist entities to “stop the campaigns of mutual slander, and direct the honest pens and swords against the head of infidelity, America, and its unjust aggressive alliance.”
“In the face of this unjust crusaders’ campaign, we have no choice but to stand in front of the hater of Islam and Muslims, the U.S. and its allies, who are the real enemies of the Muslim world,” the communiqué said. It added that The US’s main interest is to kill Muslims under the excuse of attacking the Islamic State and destroying it.”
The joint statement was dated September 11, 2014, the 13th anniversary of the Al Qaeda attacks on America.
In August, AQAP announced that it was in full support of the Islamic State. According to CIA documents, AQAP has far surpassed Al Qaeda’s core as the foremost threatening AQ branch to US interests. The United States has frequently engaged AQAP fighters in Yemen by means of aerial drone strikes.
AQIM, which operates primarily in Africa, has established jihadi offshoots such as Boko Haram, known for its attempt to create a ruthless Islamic caliphate in northeast Nigeria.
