Kirsten Powers, the great moderate liberal commentator to who actually has the courage and honesty to practice the tolerance and compassion she preaches, has asked her Twitter followers to contribute to Catholic Knights of Columbus fund to assist Iraqi Christians and Yezidis. On August 15, Powers Tweeted the following: “Knights of Columbus has started a fund for Iraqi Christians & Yezidis. 100%  goes to help in Iraq. http://www.kofc.org/un/en/news/releases/detail/kofc-fund-help-christians-iraq.html @KofC”

The Knights of Columbus press release announcing the fund states

The Knights of Columbus announced today that is establishing a fund to assist those – particularly Christians as well as other religious minorities – facing a horrific and violent persecution and possible extinction in Iraq and the surrounding regions.

The Knights has pledged an initial $500,000 and will match an additional $500,000 in donations from the public.

The release continues:

Those seeking to assist with the relief efforts can donate to K of C Christian Refugee Relief by visiting www.kofc.org/Iraq or by sending checks or money orders to: K of C Christian Refugee Relief, Knights of Columbus Charities, P.O. Box 1966, New Haven, CT 06509-1966.

Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a charitable organization under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code, and 100 percent of all donations collected by Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., will be used for humanitarian assistance for those Christians – as well as other religious minorities -being persecuted or displaced in Iraq and the surrounding region.

Reading the late Fouad Ajami’s 2006 book The Foreigner’s Gift: The Americans, the Arabs, and the Iraqis in Iraq, it is clear that the fate of Iraqi Christians is tied to the fate of Mosul. The Military history of the war in Iraq, Michael R. Gordon and Bernard E. Trainor’s 2012 book The Endgame: The Inside Story of the Struggle for Iraq, from George W. Bush to Barack Obama, lays out how the politics of the war never allowed for the troop levels a “clear and hold” strategy would necessitate in order to crush Al Qaeda until the “Surge,” and even then the re-liberation of Mosul had to wait until the primary objective, Baghdad, was stable. Then, of coarse, once things were finally stable, Obama came in and prematurely pulled the plug and let everything fall apart – and will barley lift a figure to help those innocent people in need. His golf is more important.

Thus, Powers has expressed disappointment in the records of both Obama and Bush administrations in their failure to protect Iraq’s Christians who were singled out for persecution by Islamic Extremists. She is now asking the good people of America to help.

What do you say, America?
