The suicide bomber who killed approximately three people near a Baghdad mosque on July 17 was from Melbourne, Australia. The Islamic State took credit for the attack and named Abu Bakr al-Australi as the bomber.
According to BBC News, the Australian bomber was 18-years-old.
Australian Attorney General George Brandis described the bombing as a “disturbing development.” He said, “The government deplores the violent actions being undertaken by [ISIS] and other extremist groups in Iraq and Syria, and is deeply concerned about the involvement of Australians in these activities.”
Brandis said the recruitment of Australians for jihadist attacks raises “a significant domestic security threat to Australia,” especially when the radicalized Australians return home.
Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Australia is working to prevent “[Australians] going overseas as foreign fighters.”
