Kerry Visits Kabul, Asks President Candidates to Let UN Review Election

Secretary of State John Kerry is in Kabul, Afghanistan, speaking with presidential candidates Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, asking that neither of them claim victory until the U.N. reviews the election.

At this point Ahmadzai has 56.4 percent of the vote but Abdullah “has rejected the count,” claiming it is fraudulent. 

According to Mail Online, Kerry is meeting with both candidates plus current President Hamid Karzai. He wants the U.N. to be given “a chance to investigate” the allegations “of massive voter fraud.” And he wants both candidates to refrain from “claiming victory or trying to form an administration” before the investigation is over.

The United States “has threatened to withdraw financial support for Afghanistan if either candidate tries to seize power.”
