UN: Islamic State Executed Imam of Mosque Where ISIS Leader Preached

Last month the Islamic State (IS), formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), executed 13 clerics in Mosul to rid the city of “moderate voices.” Among those executed was imam Muhammad al Mansuri, the imam over the mosque in which IS leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi led prayers on July 4.

According to McClatchy DC, “Mansuri was killed June 12 for failing to pledge allegiance to the Islamic State.” Weeks later a “21 minute video” was released, showing Baghdadi preaching from the same pulpit Mansuri once occupied.

“Twelve other Sunni clerics were executed on June 14.”

Baghdadi says that “all Muslims owe allegiance to the Islamic caliphate–which the Islamic State declared on June 29 in the areas it controls in Syria and Iraq–and [they owe allegiance] to Baghdadi, who now calls himself Caliph Ibrahim.
