On Thursday, hundreds of Bosnians in Sarajevo paid respects to 175 identified victims from the Srebrenica massacre. July 11 – 13 is the 19th anniversary of the massacre, which occurred in Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
175 people were recently identified and a truck carried the bodies down the street. Mourners lined the streets to pay respects. Some people placed flowers on the truck and others prayed. From The Daily Mail:
The victims, whose remains were discovered in mass graves and identified through DNA analysis, are being taken to Potocari cemetery in the town of Srebrenica, eastern Bosnia.
They will be buried on Friday, alongside 6,006 previously-discovered victims, to commemorate the 19th anniversary of Europe’s worst atrocity since World War Two.
The massacre was labeled genocide by two international courts and over 100,000 people were killed at the end of the Bosnian war. Men led by General Ratko Mladic “rounded up 8,000 Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) men and boys from the town and surrounding villages, before stripping them off [sic] their clothes and possessions, executing them and burying them in mass graves.” Mladic was arrested in 2011 and charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity.
