On July 8, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott will host Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, using the time with Abe to praise Japan and warn China to “check its ambitions.”

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Abbott plans to praise Japan for being an “exemplary international citizen” since the end of World War II.

He then plans to point out that China has grown “most spectacularly of all,” but that growth and the achievements spawned by it are put “at risk” via the manner in which territorial disputes are being handled in East China and South China Seas.

Abbott is expected to say, “It would be a tragedy for everyone and a disaster for us were these unique achievements to be put at risk. … The lesson of the last century is that the countries of our region will all advance together or none of us will advance at all.”

Lowry Institute’s Rory Medcalf said Japan is constructing “a web of security partnerships in Asia” as a means “to manage China’s rise.”
