Mohammad Fazl, one of the five Guantanamo Bay detainees whom President Obama traded for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, did not have a hand in planning the September 11, 2001 attacks but was key to Al Qaeda’s pre-9/11 planning and “served as the Taliban army chief of staff” prior to his capture and detention.
Moreover, The Weekly Standard reports “Fazl and one of Osama bin Laden’s chief lieutenants… [did play] key roles in the setup for 9/11.” Fazl was specifically involved in a September 10, 2001 Taliban attack “against the Northern Alliance” which Al Qaeda considered a “necessary [component] of the 9/11 plot.”
This information is based on the 9/11 Commission report, which shows that 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammad (KSM) remembered Al Qaeda military chief Mohammed Atef talking about the September 10 attack: “Fazl’s cooperation… was… part of the plan KSM remembered.”
Obama traded Fazl along with four other Taliban commanders in exchange for Bergdahl, whom fellow soldiers accuse of being a deserter.
