Libyan Warplane Attacks University Building in Benghazi

A Libyan warplane targeting “an Islamist militia” in Benghazi fired “three rockets at a neighboring university engineering…[facility]” instead.

According to Reuters, “the attack was part of a campaign by irregular forces loyal to former army general Khalifa Haftar to purge the North African state of Islamist militants whom [Haftar] says the weak central government has failed to control.”

A spokesman for Haftar claimed the jet attacked “a historic building which houses a base belonging to the militant group Ansar al-Sharia.” But this is contradicted by “a Reuters reporter at the scene” who said the building was not damaged.

However, a dean of the neighboring university said the engineering building was hit and “two people were wounded.”

The dean added: “Thank God, lectures had already finished but there is huge material damage.”
