On May 25, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) “sued Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his spokesman for libel for linking the group to Hamas.”
Harper’s spokesman Jason McDonald reacted to the suit by saying, “We will not take seriously criticism from an organization with documented ties to a terrorist organization such as Hamas.”
According to New Straits Times, NCCM said they had no choice but to sue because of the Prime Minister’s refusal to offer “a retraction and an apology.”
NCCM Executive Director Ihsaan Gardee stated, “This false accusation against the NCCM is of the most serious kind imaginable and was made in an attempt to discredit the NCCM.”
According to the National Post, the Muslim Brotherhood has a growing presence in Canada right now, and the government is being pressured to investigate the group.
Gardee called the Brotherhood a “foreign political organization” with which NCCM is not affiliated.
