North Korean News: US a 'Living Hell', 'World's Worst Human Rights Abuser'

North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency unleashed a torrent of wild accusations and even wilder grammatical errors at the United States this week, accusing President Obama of ‘indulging in luxury’ and crowning the nation a ‘kingdom of racial discrimination’ over the Trayvon Martin case.

In a column titled “News Analysis on Poor Human Rights Record in US,” the news agency accuses the United States of hypocrisy in maintaining such dire human rights circumstances while also celebrating “the 50th anniversary of the institution of citizenship act in the presence of President Obama.” While it is unclear what the “citizenship act” is that Americans just celebrated the anniversary of, it flies in the face of the realities on the ground in America, according to North Korea. 

The United States, the “world’s worst human rights abuser,” is a bastion of “racialism,” according to the report. “The gaps between the minorities and the whites are very wide in the exercise of such rights to work and elect,” it claims, using as an example the Trayvon Martin case, in which “the Florida Court gave a verdict of not guilty to a white policeman who shot to death an innocent black boy.” The report also claims “52% of the Americans have said that racism still exists in the country,” but does not indicate where this number came from.

Racism, however, is not the only problem facing Americans today, according to North Korean propaganda. President Obama’s lavish spending is oppressing the nation, as well. “Obama indulges himself in luxury almost every day, squandering hundred millions of dollars on his foreign trip in disregard of his people’s wretched life,” according to the report. President Obama is also alleged to have supported the George Zimmerman verdict, again based on no evidence, and “backed the unlawful monitoring and tapping activities,” which was at least a factual statement until President Obama announced reforms of the NSA’s intelligence gathering activities in the wake of revelations from Edward Snowden.

While North Korea has declared in this column that the United States’ human rights record is the world’s worst, it has not been consistent in bestowing this dishonor upon enemy nations. Pyongyang newspaper Rodong Sinmun published a piece called “World’s Poorest Human Rights Record in South Korea Disclosed” this week, as well, though the paper blamed the human rights record on “U.S. colonial rule.” “Human rights are more crudely violated due to the puppet forces’ medieval, tyrannical and unpopular rule,” the column alleges, listing several human rights violations such as “children kill[ing] their parents in cold blood for money and all other kinds of crimes including murder, rape and robbery.”

Meanwhile, in North Korea, electricity and food are scarce, and human rights are violated on such a rampant basis that the United Nations found enough evidence for the basis of a crimes against humanity trial at the Hague, which many are clamoring for. The crimes detailed in the UN report include torturing people by dunking them into tanks with needles under their fingernails, sexual assault of women attempting to escape, forced abortions, and starvation.

When confronted by these accusations, the North Korean government has denounced the “human rights racket” of the West for being “extremely reckless” with their accusations, despite witness testimonies and other direct proof of abuses.
