The talks on a “final” nuclear agreement begin Tuesday in Geneva between Iran and the P+5 powers (the UN Security Council plus Germany). And already, Iran’s leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is pouring cold water on the negotiations, saying that they will “lead nowhere,” even though he would not oppose them. The comments were posted on Khamanei’s website.
Khamenei has remained belligerent throughout the negotiations. On February 8, in a speech to air force commanders, he declared: “By Allah’s favor and grace, the people of Iran will achieve victory over their enemies whether on the nuclear issue or on different other issues.”
In his State of the Union Address, U.S. President Barack Obama acknowledged the talks “may not succeed.”
