The Taliban, wearing coalition uniforms, attacked a military base with suicide bombs and small arms fire, killing one U.S. soldier in southern Afghanistan.
All nine Taliban militants involved in the assault were killed during the attack on a U.S.-NATO base in Kandahar province located in the southern region of Afghanistan. Kandahar is the birthplace of the Taliban.
Two civilian bystanders–a sheep herder and his 13-year-old daughter–were also killed.
The AP reported that in a statement the U.S.-NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said, “The attack was carried out by a suicide car bomber and insurgents with automatic rifles who were also wearing suicide vests with explosives.”
“The base is currently secured and all enemy forces were killed as a result of the attack. ISAF officials are still assessing (the) scene of the incident,” said ISAF in the statement.
Breitbart News first reported that the ISAF soldier killed in the attack is from the U.S. The Taliban has claimed responsibility.
ISAF described the assault as “a coordinated suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attack.”
