The 10-year-old “suicide vest girl”–arrested and held after being spotted before her vest detonated at a police checkpoint in Afghan’s Helmand province–has revealed that she was beaten by her father and brother and denied education.
She is “thought to be the sister of a prominent Taliban commander.”
According to BBC News, the girl–known as “Spozhmai”–said her father and brother “[ordered] her to put on the vest.”
She said she is scared to go home because “they… treat… me as if I was a slave.”
Authorities are willing to release her back to her family only on the condition that “tribal elders [guarantee] her safety.” But Spozhmai has “appealed to Afghan President Hamid Karzai to put her in a new home.”
