Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif promised that his government would review the case of Dr. Shakil Afridi, the doctor who has been imprisoned since 2011 for helping the United States find Osama bin Laden, Fox News reports. Dr. Afridi has been held though his conviction was overturned earlier this year. He awaits either a retrial based on the same evidence, or an entirely new trial, pending an appeals court ruling Oct. 30.
Originally, Dr. Afridi was sentenced to an unusual 33 years in prison by a tribal court in a system established under British colonial rule that prevented him from having any legal representation. Those pressing for his release include House Foreign Affairs committee chair Ed Royce (R-CA), Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), and Bob and Kira Lorsch, private citizens from Los Angeles who have organized the Free Afridi campaign.
