The German government believes Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cellphone may be under surveillance by the U.S.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the German government released a statement saying it had “received information that the mobile phone of the Chancellor may be under surveillance by U.S. agencies.”
Merkel raised this concern during an October 23 phone call with President Obama, warning him that any such “intrusion” would constitute a “grave breach of trust” between the two allies. She said she “unequivocally deplores such practices and sees them as completely unacceptable.”
Obama assured Merkel that her cellphone was not under U.S. surveillance.
The White House also released a statement saying the U.S. “is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of Chancellor Merkel.”
