During the October 6 airing of This Week With George Stephanopoulos, Martha Raddatz reported that SEAL Team Six has conducted a raid on terrorists in Somalia and was met with greater resistance than expected.
According to Raddatz, the raid took place against a target in Baraawe but the status of the target cannot be confirmed: “They cannot confirm the target [is] dead. We do not know who the target was, but this was SEAL Team Six,” the same team that took out Osama bin Laden.
They carried out this raid “south of Mogadishu, they came in from the Indian Ocean, they approached the seaside home of the this target… opened fire but they met much, much more resistance than they thought they would so they had to withdraw.”
Raddatz said the SEAL Team is not certain of the identification of all occupants in the house–we now wait “for human intelligence” to ascertain if the target was taken out. It is known the target was an al-Shabaab jihadist.
Secretary of State John Kerry claimed the raid a success, saying: “To those members of Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations, literally you can run but they can’t hide.”
