Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said Russian President Vladimir Putin could not be trusted, but the United States had to work with him on Syria.
On CBS’s Face the Nation Sunday, host Bob Schieffer asked Albright, who served as Secretary of State under President Bill Clinton, whether she trusted Putin.
“No,” she said. “I don’t think we have to trust him; we have to be able to work with him on issues of common interests.”
Albright also said she believed the Russians saw the danger of “extremists getting control” of chemical weapons and Putin wanted more stability in the Middle East before noting she felt the Russians had the goal of getting “re-involved” in Middle Eastern affairs.
