On May 28, the representative of the Iranian regime, Mohsen Naziri Asl, officially became President of the U.N. Conference on Disarmament, a rotating position.
U.N. Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer reacted by calling Iran’s elevated position “scandalous.” He also said that “making Iran the head of world disarmament is like putting Jack the Ripper in charge of a women’s shelter.”
On May 24, a bipartisan group of 72 members of Congress signed and sent a letter to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in hopes of persuading the U.N. to drop their plans to give Iran this position. In the letter members of Congress “[demanded]” that Iran not be allowed to chair the Conference on Disarmament.
The 72 members of Congress added:
By allowing Iran to chair this Conference, the United Nations is legitimizing a tyrannical regime committed to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction while delegitmizing the United States as a force to contain nuclear weapons. Indeed, a conference seeking nuclear transparency and disarmament will be led by a country operating a dangerous and covert nuclear program that threatens global nuclear security.
