Two years after the U.S. intervened in Libyan affairs to have Muammar Gaddafi overthrown under the guise that a freer, more tolerant society would be ushered in, an American Christian has been imprisoned for allegedly proselytizing in Benghazi.
News of an American Christian being arrested by Libyans was first reported by Al Jezeera on Feb. 14. It is believed the American has been imprisoned since that time.
The news of this imprisonment has been confirmed by “a senior administration official” as well as a State Department spokesperson.
It is also being reported that the Libyan government arrested seven other Christians–none of them Americans–who were allegedly proselytizing alongside the American. Since that time, one of these has allegedly been tortured to death.
Another troubling aspect to all this is that it was only six months ago that U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.
