The Embassy of India criticized Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel for remarks he made in 2011 at Cameron University in Oklahoma, in which he alleged that India was using Afghanistan to sponsor terrorist attacks against neighboring Pakistan. The remarks were unearthed Monday by the Washington Free Beacon.
An embassy spokesperson told the Free Beacon: “”Such comments attributed to Sen. Hagel, who has been a long-standing friend of India and a prominent votary of close India-U.S. relations, are contrary to the reality of India’s unbounded dedication to the welfare of the Afghan people.”
Hagel faces a confirmation vote Tuesday.
