Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is considering establishing a buffer between Israel and Syria. The buffer zone would reach “up to 10 miles inside Syria” and remain in place for a number of years.
Although a security fence is being “erected from Mount Avital south to the point where the Israeli, Syrian, and Jordanian borders meet,” military analysts are convinced this is not sufficient to prevent incoming mortar strikes and rocket attacks from a completely destabilized Syria.
Netanyahu is concerned because the area opposite the fence once contained regiments of the Syrian army but now contains bands of jihadist rebels.
No timeline has been provided for when Netanyahu will decide on creating the buffer.
