It was only a week ago that I had a post looking at the dangers of China and Russia joining forces on the wrong side of the Syrian conflict: the two of them supporting the Syrian government while the U.S. looks to support the Syrian opposition. And look what a change a week has brought. Now it’s not just China and Russia, but these two and Iran forming ranks with Syria.
And where’s Obama on all this?
Surely he knows we need him to spend his time at the G20 Summit doing a bit more than avoiding Putin–doesn’t he?
According to reports, Iran, Syria, Russia and China are planning a series of “war games” next month that require Russia’s “atomic submarines and warships, aircraft carriers and mine-clearing destroyers as well as Iranian battleships and submarines” to travel to Syria. Egypt is also allowing Chinese war vessels to cross the Suez Canal in order to be there for the “war games” as well.
What this means in plain English is that “90,000 troops, 400 aircraft and 1,000 tanks” are headed to Syria, for Syria, next month.
Has anyone in the Obama administration verified that “war games” are really taking place? Or do we learn that it was a façade only after the heel of the boot rests on the throat of the defeated?
It was only three months ago that Gov. Mitt Romney referred to Russia as “our number one geopolitical foe” and his foreign policy adviser criticized Obama’s “mother may I?” foreign policy approach to Iran. Both countries revolted at the comments, with Russia’s Medvedev mockingly criticizing Romney’s assertion. But look where we are today.
