What if they held a war and we couldn’t afford to participate?

The White House wants to institute a “cap” on the amount of money that can be spent on war operations over the next decade.  You can spend $450 billion,  is the proposal–and no more.

“Hold your fire!  We’re on a budget!”

The White House rationale makes some sense at a certain level.  They don’t want the Pentagon shifting budget items to the so-called Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) accounts as a way to get around spending cuts.  But seriously?  You’re going to limit a war budget?

Let’s hope we don’t need to use it.  Let’s hope that we only use our forces when they are in our national interest.  Lets hope that we don’t have an Iraq or Afghanistan we have to fight over the next decade.  But….you never know.  And to “cap” war funding is absurd on so many levels.
